Woden No W5 Jack plane

Another recent Kijiji finds, an almost perfect specimen still in the cardboard box with the instructions pamphlet. It was a bit out of my way, Truro NS, but it was a good ride in the country side, and it so happened that one of my girlfriend sisters lives in Truro, so great excuse for a visit. Thank you Crystal and Paul for the hospitality :-)

What is inside, complete with plane pamphlet



The Woden company of Wednesbury Staffordshire (1868-1961) was a maker of a limited range of hand tools for woodworking such as ratchet braces, carpenter bench cramps (vises) flooring cramps, wrenches etc. They had a steel foundry and were equipped to make all the parts required to make hand tools. The hand tool division was relatively small within the overall product range, of metal castings, nuts and bolts and related steel products.

Like most British companies that were heavily involved in the war effort (WW2), the company struggled to return to normal products production due to a shortage of raw material and qualified manpower.

They did not manufactured metallic planes until 1954 after acquiring WS Birmingham in 1952. Part of this acquisition gave them the redesigned copy of the Stanley No 78 Duplex Rabbet plane, the dual fence rail WS78, which would later becomes Record 778 after Record purchased them in 1961.

Paul Sellers really like them so you know they are every bit as good or better than Stanley and Record.

Their planes offering grew to includes two Block planes the W110 and W130

Bench planes:
Smoothers W4 and 4-1/2
Jack planes W5 and 5-1/2
Fore plane W6, and
Jointer plane W7
They never produced size No 2, 3, 5-1/4, 8
They also made some corrugated sole bench planes until 1963
And of course the better copy of Stanley No 78, the W78 Duplex Rabbet plane.

This was a somewhat limited offering compared to Stanley and Record, but in order to compete they had to produce a high quality and finish product, which they delivered. They are as good, and in the case of the W78, better than the originals Stanley and Record copies (No 078 specifically)

In the early 60s Record was expanding by purchasing rivals manufacturers, they acquired Woden in 1961 and moved operations to Sheffield.

Early on the planes had a mixture of parts from the old Woden's parts and the newly produced ones from Record.
Gradually, all parts were being made solely by Record, with a few small modifications in materials and design.
Record continued to produce the Woden range under that name until about 1965
Other products were continued under Record own model numbering, such as the W78 which became Record No 778.

Lets see what we have here and try to narrow it down to a period of manufacture.


According to this site there are 5 different productions variations, or Types:
As usual for these Types studies, it is based on the No 4 (W4)

Three (3) from Woden and the last two (2) when Record took over:

Type 1 - 1954-55, early production,

- Bodies without "QC" or "Q" foundry marks (in house Woden foundry)
- W4's with single lower pane frogs
- 2 inch frogs with small (4mm) marks
- 2 in lever caps with inside lower flat or rounded bottom edges
- Type 1 or 2 cutters
- Type 1 Label (L1) boxes and Woden Plane Instruction pamphlet (WPI 2 or 3)

Type 2 - 1955-57

- Bodies without "QC" marks (in house)
- 2 inch frogs with 2 lower panes, without "Q" marks but with single 5.5 mm       marks
- 2 inch lever caps without inside bottom flat, with or without rounded bottom edges
- Type 1 or 2 cutters
- Type L1 boxes and Type 2 or 3 Woden Plane Instruction pamphlet

Type 3 -  1957-61 late production

- Bodies including the "Q" or "QC" foundry marks (out sourced to Qualcast foundry)
- Frogs with "Q" marks and 5.5 mm marks
- 2 inch lever caps without inside bottom flat and square corners
- Type 2 or Type 3 New Improved Cutters (NIC)
- Type L1 or L2 boxes with or without NIC label, and
- Type 3 or 4 Woden plane instruction pamphlet

Type 4 - 1961-1962 Early Record production, the change over period

"Changeover" planes were being assembled in Sheffield (Record) with Wednesbury made parts (Woden). There were problems with Record using a mix of Woden and Record manufactured parts that were using different screw threads. Woden used mainly BSF screws and Record  used the historic Stanley and BSW threads. This resulted in some re-machining and or a few special "one of" parts to be found

- "WODEN" and "No Wx" cast marked on either a Woden or Record shaped body
- Either Woden or Record specified frog
- Woden Type 4 Tungsten Vanadium cutter with stamped marks
- Either Woden original or Record modified lever caps
- Either Woden or Record wood parts with the original Woden transfer slide decal affixed to the handle
- Either Woden or Record specified depth adjustment wheel with appropriate screw or
- Unusual pattern of depth adjustment wheel with Woden screw

Type 5 - 1962-65 Record production until discontinued

- A Record body shape with just "No 4" in front of, or behind the knob and NO "Woden" cast marks
- A Record type frog having a thicker USA UNF thread depth adjustment screw
- Record unmarked adjustment wheel
- Record 3 pieces lateral adjustment lever with a bottom fixing rivet
- A lever cap with either a Woden cast mark with a red or orange background
- Later Record production had no Woden cast marks but a simple transfer decal near the top
- Lever cap handle is shorter and curved is more pronounced. Woden made had a lever length from cam boss to tip of about 29 mm, Record about 26 mm
- Record wood parts with Woden transfer slide decal on the handle top
- Record small parts: Cheese headed frog screws, straight frog clip with round
 head screw and Record BSW ended studs for the handle and knob

L2 box (black) and label 1957-61/62

"Woden" red paint, "Record" had more of an orange paint.
From about 1956-7, the plating improved and did not easily flaked and resist corrosion better. This thing is perfect...

Less pronounced and longer curved lever.
The shoulder cam is higher 51mm versus 48mm 

Knob and tote have some finish flaking off. Lacquer, Shellac or Varnish? 
I see this typically on Record tools.

Later Record has a more pointed end like a set screw.
This is just about the only rusted screw on the whole plane.

Notice the slight angle machined on the frog for the clip.

Lever cap screw has the Record longer non thread portion 

Front toe casting shows WODEN and No W5
Later Record made models had only No 5 cast in front of knob
Knob shows waisted barrel nut, earlier were plain cylinder.

Rear casting has MADE IN ENGLAND
and QC 2 stamped inside the tote receiver

Side show some minor discoloration

Sole has virtually no scratches

This side shows the most discoloration, light surface rust 
should easily cleaned up


Everything point to an earlier Type 4 1961-62 Changeover period plane.

The japanning is in perfect condition, there are some small stained surfaces here and there on the bright metal parts. The level cap is just like new, the iron is unused and full length but has some small chips at the cutting edge. The wooden parts, tote and knob have no defect except for flaking off protective coating (shellac or varnish) here and there. The box is in good shape but the pamphlet has some rust stains on it. All in all, an unusual find in great shape. I don't often run into these. Quite the score : -)

Well worth the travel to Truro and got to spend some quality time with Jean's sister Crystal and her husband Paul... Bonus :-)

On our way to a convoluted evolution...

From the simple wooden planes that made the basic joinery possible: Rabbet, Plough, Fillester, Dado, Tonguing and Grooving planes, to its perhaps foregone conclusion.

What the... Am I talking about? Believe it or not, I am simply answering Matt question about that odd shaped metal piece I called a Stanley No 45 Cam rest.
Yeah really!! :-)

In the beginning it was simple, the basic joinery in Western woodworking had evolved into a set of easily executed joinery with a chisel and a saw.
But being repetitive and mostly made up of square shoulders, they could easily be made with some sort of wooden planes.


GROOVY PLANES

A simple chisel stuck in a piece of 2X4 construction wood, could serve as a router plane, a plough plane etc depending how installed and used.



The Dado, the Groove and the Rabbet only differ in their orientation to the wood grain and the open edge of the rabbet.

Lets cut the rabbet first, it is the easiest.
Only thing our plane need is a bottom sole the width of the rabbet and a blade whose cutting edge is the full width of the sole.

That would required a set of planes of various rabbet width, as many as required.

Make the sole as wide as the largest rabbet you want to cut and install a fence riding under the sole. That would only expose a variable part of the cutting edge, making variable width rabbets.
We have a Filletster plane.

Top - Stanley No 78 Duplex Rabbet Filletster plane.

To make a groove, we only have to worry about having a cutter the width of the groove and have a fence to set the groove a set distance off the reference edge.

That would required a set of planes of various groove width, as many as required. And would required a set of planes of various fence spacing width, as many as required.

Make the fence variable and make the cutter replaceable by cutters of various width and we have a winner! Only one plane with a set of 8 cutters:

The cutter centering is accomplished by a V groove in the cutter back registering with the plane skate, which is essentially the plane sole. We don't need a large skate (sole) it would be riding at the bottom of the groove, and these are never very wide, they are grooves...

To cut the groove requires a simple fixed blade plow plane and a matching
plane to cut the corresponding tongue.

If you go the wooden plane way, make very sure that the so called match set of planes you are buying are in fact a match set... just saying DAMHIKT

To me the best plane for cutting a match set of T&G remained
 the Stanley No 48 with its swinging fence.

So to the very astute would be plane inventor in the late 19th century, a logical conclusion could have been something like:
Need a body to hold the replaceable cutter(s) square to the face and adjustable in depth. Only need a skate for a sole, but for added stability when adjusting wide, a second movable skate should be added.
Make the fence adjustable under the sole for a Fillister effect.
Add a few simple moulding profile and you add to its repertoire.

Drum roll please... Enter the dreaded and loved Combination plane. A marvel of engineering and frustration....

In  the days priors such mechanical contraptions, workers also used separate moulding planes, in order to tackle a variety of profiles...
That meant carrying an assortment of moulding planes inside a toolbox.
Early on these wooden moulding planes were not of a standard length, varying from approx 9 to 10 inches long, some slightly longer even. For ease of portability and storage, many of these early 18th century planes were later docked to fit the ''newly introduced standard'' of 9 inch.

The challenge for would be planemakers seeking fame and fortune, was to come up with a single plane which could replace a box load of wooden moulding planes.

Yes, the combination plane can easily replaced all the above mentioned planes in various sizes and fenced setting, add a few more accessories and you can inflict even more frustrations to the unwary.... Masochists :-)

One of the first successful design, later to be acquired by Stanley, was the Miller patent.  In truth it was not quite a combination plane as we know it today, but it was the one that start it all.


The CH Miller Improved Carpenter's plane

Charles H Miller of Brattleborough Vermont received a patent on 28 June 1870 for what he called an "Improved carpenter'' plane.
What was the improvement you asked? It was the combination of 3 in 1 tools, It's a grooving, rabbeting and a smooth plane. Essentially it is a plow plane which could work as a smoothing plane with a large blade supported by an attached side mounted bed (called the Filletster bed) to support the blade. That smoother feature is greatly exaggerated, it would make a lousy smoother...

Once the patent and its designer were acquired by Stanley, they experimented with various design of metallic combination and plow plane, the No 41, 42, 43 and 44 planes, before settling on the No 45 and later taking the design to its ultimate gizmo centric No 55. A planing mill in itself!

No 41 is a cast iron Filletster, Plow and Matching plane
No 42 is a gunmetal Filletster, Plow and Matching plane
No 43 is a cast iron  Plow and Matching plane
No 44 is a gunmetal Plow and Matching plane


No 46 and 47 are cast iron skew cutters versions
No 46 is the Traut's patent Plow, Dado, Fillister and Match plane came with 10 to 12 cutters
No 47 is same as No 46 (same casting useds) but came with less cutters, had 5 to 7 cutters


Because essentially such combination planes do not have a sole matching the cutter profile, some cutters would requires special sole bottom attachments such as Hollows and Rounds.  The skate idea even with a cam rest would not work on these profile cutters for their intended purpose.

The basic problem with the narrow skate used as a sole is one of stability, it becomes oh so easy to tip the plane. The more the fence is extended from the plane narrow body, or more apparent when using profiled or wider cutters, the more tippy it becomes and it is oh so easy to buggered up the profile of our cuts.

Solutions are two fold: add one or more skate to the plane.
Make the added skate(s) adjustable in both position and height and we have reached the zenith: the Stanley No 55

Or.... on our lowly No 45, the problem was addressed simply by adding a cam rest. Make the pivot hole off centered and you can adjust it for various height.


It first started to show up around 1902 with the Type 8 plane. The first incarnation was fragile and harder to manufactured so it was quickly changed to the type I found.

That work, but in use it also act as a secondary depth stop.  And like any adjustments which are locked simply by a lone set screw on a round post does....
it tend to move, making a lousy depth stop :-)

You cannot stop progress.... Even if it is a very convoluted way to get there...

So how do you attach this after thought, it was patented in 1901 long after the No 45 was manufactured since 1884.



It goes between the auxiliary skate and the plane body, or between the fence and auxiliary skate (sliding section) so....
The fence then the auxiliary skate comes off...




So there you go Matt the 'simple' answer to your question: 
can you tell me what the cam is /does? :-)

Winter has finally arrived in Nova Scotia...

Well, parts of it have been snow bound for a while, Cape Breton and area mainly, but here in the Annapolis Valley it is our first real snow fall, we had a black Christmas...

Thru last nite and this morning we had our first share of snow, but I am pretty sure I am not going to get much sympathies from my family and friends in Ontario and Quebec, they had more than their share of snow already :-)
Ahhhh  I feel your pains, aches and I smell like gas ....

This is what greeted Rudy on the back deck for his morning ablutions....

... Unless you are a young kid. To me the novelty wore off many years ago...

I had my snowblower serviced recently, as I do every year, filled the tank and away we go... Well not so fast sports fans, I still got these older metal swinging garage doors, so they won't open if they feel resistance from the snow outside....

So I must first shovel my way out the front door to the garage doors to clear enough of a space to open the doors to get the snowblower out. Ah the inhumanity of it all ! (say that while holding your arm over your eyes, it is more theatrical :-)

Oh, here are the vehicles. My car is now almost as tall as her pick up truck..

has happened before, oh what joy to curse in both official languages :-)


So has I sit at the keyboard, warming up my fingers by typing, smelling gas and awaiting to go get some more, then going to rejoin her at her place and do it all over again, except that she has a school bus in her driveway, takes a while to cleared out :-)

School would probably be cancelled tomorrow, more snow coming our way overnite and in the morning, we still have to get her bus ready for the morning school's runs

Sometimes you get lucky...

... on Kijiji.... (Sort of the Cdn equivalent to Craig list in the USA)

Its been a while I lurked on it, so in between house chores, I figured I had a look see.
You never know what you gonna find, it's a crap shot...

Yesterday, I got lucky, iI spied this enigmatic listing with no pictures, up from Nov 19th. No pics in your listing tend to do that... they linger without much interest...

Two things caught my attention: the fact that it comes with its own box, which means very low usage, and a Pat date of 1901. I already own a No 95 Stanley Butt gauge, but, for Cdn $35 with original box, turn of the century, Yah, I'll go have a look :-)

After making arrangements to see it, dressed up Rudy for the ride and made the drive over to Halls Harbour, famous for its lobsters and... its pirate's legend back into the US war of independence .

She brought me a small yellowish paste box with an old Stanley Level & Co label. Heart start racing... Then I opened the box, saw a Stanley No 45 cam rest with a few more tidbits resting atop the Butt gage. I quickly closed the box and said, I'll take it!


Back home after a white knuckle ride down the tortuous mountain snow covered, icy, dirt road down to the valley, stupid GPS is taking the shortest route direct, not necessarily the one I would take Grrr... (stupid technology trying to be helpful)

Anyway, back home this is what I found inside the box, I am very happy with my find :-)

The label reads:

PLEASE NOTE

This tool was made at the Canadian Branch of the STANLEY RULE & LEVEL COMPANY, at The Roxton Tool & Mill Company, Limited, Roxton Pond, Quebec, under the superintendence, ownership and trademarks of the said STANLEY COMPANY, and is fully warranted.  

Stanley started in Canada when they acquire the Roxton Pond Tool & Mill in Roxton Pond Quebec in 1907. Car loads of parts, equipment and tooling came to Roxton Pond along with Stanley personnel to start the Canadian operation. The tools produced were identical to the US production, pretty soon they would grow to manufactured almost the complete tool lines. This piece of paper explaining that it was made in Canada and the small label affixed over the US label, all point to the earliest days of Stanley production in Canada. That to me is priceless. Never came across any mention of that before. Ephemeras, the paper artifacts, never last long, most are thrown out or long lost. The rough box and that piece of paper are worth more to me than the price I paid for it all...

The other big part sitting on top was a Cam rest for a Stanley No 45. I just happened to own two with this piece missing... Bonus :-)

I'll give you a hint, look at the blades selection for the No 45 or 55... whenever missing they are worth more than the complete assembly... (they are depth stops)

The Stanley No 45 Cam rest is the second Type, 
and an early example of this type, as indicated 
by its patent date of 1901. And yes the small cylindrical piece
 bearing at the end of the screw is still present :-)

So all in all, a fun drive in snowy covered mountains roads to find a piece of Canadiana tool history. Does not get any better than this :-)
